COPENHAGEN The Cultural Canon Project and Assistens Cemetery In January 2006, the Danish Ministry of Culture issued a canon of Danish art and culture with the intention of presenting the greatest, most important works of Denmark’s cultural heritage. The canon comprises 96 works of art within the art forms architecture, visual arts, design and crafts, film, literature, music and drama. Whether the selected works truly do represent the best of Danish art and culture, can be and has been debated, as has the whole idea of a cultural canon promoted by the state. Nevertheless, the canon undeniably contains works of good quality by distinguished artists. It is noteworthy that a cemetery – Mariebjerg Cemetery in Gentofte north of Copenhagen - has been included in the canon. In Copenhagen’s most significant cemetery, Assistens Cemetery, it is the monuments by and graves of artists that make the canon topical. Thursday 1st June at 4:30 p.m. Guided tours to the graves, monuments and works of some of the artists included in the cultural canon and buried on Assistens Cemetery. Meeting place: Main entrance to Assistens Cemetery, Kapelvej 2, 2200 København N. Info: sth@tmf.kk.dk
